    Optimal Scaling of a Gradient Method for Distributed Resource Allocation

    We consider a class of weighted gradient methods for distributed resource allocation over a network. Each node of the network is associated with a local variable and a convex cost function; the sum of the variables (resources) across the network is fixed. Starting with a feasible allocation, each node updates its local variable in proportion to the differences between the marginal costs of itself and its neighbors. We focus on how to choose the proportional weights on the edges (scaling factors for the gradient method) to make this distributed algorithm converge and on how to make the convergence as fast as possible. We give sufficient conditions on the edge weights for the algorithm to converge monotonically to the optimal solution; these conditions have the form of a linear matrix inequality. We give some simple, explicit methods to choose the weights that satisfy these conditions. We derive a guaranteed convergence rate for the algorithm and find the weights that minimize this rate by solving a semidefinite program. Finally, we extend the main results to problems with general equality constraints and problems with block separable objective function

    Multi-mesh gear dynamics program evaluation and enhancements

    A multiple mesh gear dynamics computer program was continually developed and modified during the last four years. The program can handle epicyclic gear systems as well as single mesh systems with internal, buttress, or helical tooth forms. The following modifications were added under the current funding: variable contact friction, planet cage and ring gear rim flexibility options, user friendly options, dynamic side bands, a speed survey option and the combining of the single and multiple mesh options into one general program. The modified program was evaluated by comparing calculated values to published test data and to test data taken on a Hamilton Standard turboprop reduction gear-box. In general, the correlation between the test data and the analytical data is good

    Heavy Meson Masses in the \epsilon-Regime of HM\chi PT

    The pseudoscalar and vector heavy meson masses are calculated in the \epsilon-regime of Heavy Meson Chiral Perturbation Theory to order \epsilon^4. The results of this calculation will allow the determination of low-energy coefficients (LECs) directly from Lattice QCD calculations of the heavy mesons masses for lattices that satisfy the \epsilon-regime criteria. In particular, the LECs that parametrize the NLO volume dependance of the heavy meson masses are necessary for evaluating the light pseudoscalar meson (\pi, K, \eta) and heavy meson ({D^0, D^+, D^+_s}, {B^-,\bar{B}^0,\bar{B}^0_s}) scattering phase shifts.Comment: 16 pages, 6 figure

    A Perspective on the Use of Storable Propellants for Future Space Vehicle Propulsion

    Propulsion system configurations for future NASA and DOD space initiatives are driven by the continually emerging new mission requirements. These initiatives cover an extremely wide range of mission scenarios, from unmanned planetary programs, to manned lunar and planetary programs, to earth-oriented (Mission to Planet Earth) programs, and they are in addition to existing and future requirements for near-earth missions such as to geosynchronous earth orbit (GEO). Increasing space transportation costs, and anticipated high costs associated with space-basing of future vehicles, necessitate consideration of cost-effective and easily maintainable configurations which maximize the use of existing technologies and assets, and use budgetary resources effectively. System design considerations associated with the use of storable propellants to fill these needs are presented. Comparisons in areas such as complexity, performance, flexibility, maintainability, and technology status are made for earth and space storable propellants, including nitrogen tetroxide/monomethylhydrazine and LOX/monomethylhydrazine

    This paper examines whether the U.S. banking industry's recent consolidation trend--toward fewer and bigger firms--is a natural result of market forces. The paper finds that it is not: The evidence does not support the popular claims that large banking firms are more efficient and less risky than smaller firms or the notion that the industry is consolidating in order to eliminate excess capacity. The paper suggests, instead, that public policies are encouraging banks to merge, although it acknowledges that other forces may be at work as well.Bank mergers

    Interaction of a Modulated Electron Beam with a Plasma

    The results of a theoretical and experimental investigation of the high-frequency interaction of an electron beam with a plasma are reported. An electron beam, modulated at a microwave frequency, passes through a uniform region of a mercury arc discharge after which it is demodulated. Exponentially growing wave amplification along the electron beam was experimentally observed for the first time at a microwave frequency equal to the plasma frequency. Approximate theories of the effects of 1) plasma-electron collision frequencies, 2) plasma-electron thermal velocities and 3) finite beam diameter, are given. In a second experiment the interaction between a modulated electron beam and a slow electrostatic wave on a plasma column has been studied. A strong interaction occurs when the velocity of the electron beam is approximately equal to the velocity of the wave and the interaction is essentially the same as that which occurs in traveling-wave amplifiers, except that here the plasma colum replaces the usual helical slow-wave circuit. The theory predicting rates of growth is presented and compared with the experimental results
